Introducing the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology at Virginia Tech (ICAT): Research and Industrial Partnership at the Intersection of Art, Design, Engineering, and Science
Presented by: Dr. Benjamin Knapp The symbiotic relationship between creativity and the ability to explore new frontiers is clear and compelling. The Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology, the newest of seven research institutes at Virginia Tech, seeks to explore this relationship. More than just a “Media Lab”, ICAT is a “Transdisciplinary Living Lab” tightly integrated with educational, commercial, and arts communities. This talk will introduce the institute, its studios, and its three fold mission of 1) preparing students to be part of a new type of transdisciplinary workforce necessary to succeed in this era of rapid innovation, 2) driving economic development by creating an environment for partnering with companies that can adapt and succeed in response to the transdisciplinary driving forces of today’s economy, and 3) engaging the general public at the intersections of science, engineering, art, and design. Takeaways: 1. Learn about the studios of ICAT and how you can be a part of them 2. Learn about upcoming events including workshops, maker fairs, hack-a-thons, etc. 3. Understand how art, design, engineering, and science are coming together on various research projects 4. Get ideas about how your company can partner with ICAT and vice-versa
