Keynote Speakers

Ms. Agee is president and chief executive officer of Carilion Clinic, an integrated healthcare organization headquartered in Western Virginia that includes a multi-specialty physician group, seven hospitals, MajestaCare (Medicaid Insurance Plan), the Jefferson College of Health Sciences and a joint ventured medical school with Virginia Tech. Ms. Agee began her career in nursing and has served in escalating leadership roles with Carilion for more than 20 years.
Nancy serves on several Boards including American Hospital Association Board of Trustees, The Joint Commission, Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, Virginia Health Innovation Network, AHA Regional Policy Board, Roanoke Gas Company, HomeTown Bank, Rockingham Mutual Insurance Company, Western Virginia Foundation for the Arts and The Taubman Museum. Previously, she has served as Vice Rector of the Radford University Board of Visitors and Chaired the Foundation of Roanoke Valley.
Nancy Agee holds degrees with honors from the University of Virginia and Emory University and participated in postgraduate studies at the Kellogg School of Business, Northwestern University.

Michael Friedlander, PhD, is founding executive director of the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, where he provides leadership to more than two dozen premier research teams engaged in developing new strategies for preventing, diagnosing, and treating major health challenges.
As associate provost for health sciences at Virginia Tech, Dr. Friedlander recently led the development of the university’s new Faculty of Health Sciences and a university-wide doctoral program in Translational Biology, Medicine, and Health. Also at Virginia Tech, Dr. Friedlander is a professor of biological sciences and of biomedical engineering and sciences. In addition, Dr. Friedlander serves as senior dean for research at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, where he is a professor of psychiatry and behavioral medicine.
Dr. Friedlander’s research programs have been continuously supported by the National Institutes of Health for more than 30 years. His laboratory focuses the cellular processes that underlie learning in the brain in health, during development, and after traumatic brain injury.
